You look at this game and understand a lot of why old games were better than the "modern" ones are. With the little resources available in the middle 80's to make a game (the original OutRun came out in arcade machines in the US around 1986 I think), they not only created a racing game, but one in which the point is to drive a Ferrari with a hot blonde on the front seat. I don't think this was what made this game a huge hit back then, but they don't pay attention to that kind of detail anymore.
Ok, first of all, let's be honest: the PC version of OutRun is garbage in comparison to the original arcade game. The songs were terribly converted to PC speaker, and the graphics... well, they retain the whole OutRun feeling, but the arcade game was so much better! It's still OutRun though, so keep reading.
When you start, there's the radio screen, where you get to choose the song you'll be listening to. I personally prefer turning off the radio so I can listen to the car sounds -- the songs sound really bad anyway. Then on to the race. The objective in OutRun is to complete each track in a certain amount of time. Clock is ticking, so don't waste time crashing on trees or other obstacles. By the end of each stage you get to choose between two other tracks to continue racing. Each track you take has its particular design and obstacles. It goes on up to the fifth track, where you complete the game. It's quite a short game if you ask me, but it's hard to complete, and when you don't complete one of the tracks in time, you have to start over. Wonder how come it was such a huge hit back then! Anyway, the point is, it's essentially an old-school arcade game.
It's impossible not to be nostalgic about this one. Ever dreamed of having one of those arcade machines at home? For now you can play one of the best of those old arcade classics on your computer!
