On the box cover it says "a virtual adventure game inspired by the work of H.P. Lovecraft". Fair warning. Not many games tried to be scary in the early nineties, and Alone managed to.
Well, it's all about the atmosphere. A wrong turn, one reckless step, and you're dead. The monstrosities that haunt Derceto are generally quite slow, so most of times they don't pose real threat. But you're the only living being in a house filled with undeath, and sometimes you're heavily outnumbered, sometimes you have no way out, sometimes bullets don't work...
Story is as follows: the artist Jeremy Hartwood died misteriously, and now his mansion Derceto lies empty, silent. Almost too silent. It is believed that Jeremy took his own life. But why? And what are the lights that can be seen through the house's windows by nightfall? You go in to check it out and... well, now you can't leave.
The mansion has lots of rooms and corridors to explore, and nearly every closet, chest and desk has some item to pick up and use. If you never played it, Alone could take weeks to complete. All puzzles are intuitive, but some can be challenging, specially if you miss something or use some item wrongly. Save often! Some challenges will kill you quickly if you're not ready, and some things can kill you on spot. It should be enough to keep you on your toes.
Alone in the dark had impressive 3D graphics and sounds for its time. Even its PC speaker sounds are great! Interface is quite simple -- simply hit Enter to choose an action and Space to act. If you're fighting, Space + Arrows should put those zombies to sleep.
If you never played this game, know that even today it is incredibly fun. It's misterious, challenging, and has great atmosphere. You didn't watch enough of scary movies until you played Alone in the dark.
