I'll never forget, first time I played Budokan was on some friend's dusty old PC XT, with a monocromatic screen. Yeah, and I knew nearly nothing about computers by that time, so it was kinda crappy to me, because I couldn't figure out the commands right. I didn't have too much time to try anyway, it was only for a few minutes. But it was enough, I never forgot that game. Budokan.
What's so good about this game? It's not fast-paced, no, not in comparison to other fighting games. You can't choose among different characters with individual moves a la Street Fighter. You don't even expect much, it was released in the late 80's. Heh, you don't know what this is about yet.
Budokan had incredible graphics and sounds for its time, four fighting styles (and you had to master all of them), fairly realistic animations and fights and an obscene number of moves for each fight style. Out of that, it's a very simple game, with practically no storyline. First you train karate, bo, nunchaku and kendo, then, when you feel you mastered the moves and tricks of each, you step onto the world tournament, where you get to fight your way through to the big champion title. And it's quite an accomplishment, I asure you.
The game won't surprise you much once you're used to it, but mastering it is going to be a real challenge, which adds a reason why you should play it. :)
