Trading-for-profit games are usually impopular or overlooked, but 1869 has many good qualities to make it enjoyable, such as good graphics and sounds and adventure elements to keep you interested.
The game is basically about controlling ships that can travel all over the world buying goods from the lowest bidder and selling them to the needy -- for a profit. There's a decent amount of management involved and, as you can expect from sailing in the 19th century, plenty of risks.
In order to be successful, you must be aware of what each port buys/sells, as well as political issues -- war could erupt any minute, and being in the middle of it might or not be a good thing, for example. And it's not only that: there'll be people working for you, you have to keep them fed and well paid. There are many kinds of ships to choose from, and that obviously makes a great difference. There are also plenty of mini "quests" you perform for bonus cash. So there's a lot to see and do.
Other than this, I must say the graphics were really beautiful for its time, colorful and sharp. Music is fine too. And overall it's a fun game with the right amount of challenge, so you should try it out.
