In a not too distant future, big corporations will rule entire countries with their economic influence and the power of their technologies. The struggle to control all aspects of market and demographics will lead to an underground war, fought by the corporations through the use of the "agents"... people who formerly had a real life, but were abducted to receive enhancement implants and do the corporations' dirty work. And they don't have an option. Most are killed during the abduction, only to be revived in a secluded lab, with special implants that grant the corporation total mental control over the agents. They will gladly die for their "cause".
In the middle of this great novel-like cyberpunk plotline, you're the owner of one of the big corporations in the world. As far as the underground market war goes, you send your agents into missions to control more and more markets, persuading influential people, assassinating politicians that stand in your way, abducting scientists and creative minds... and more importantly, sending your agents ultimately against other corporations' agents. Each successful mission grants you a new region of influence, which provides funds for your research on new technologies, equipment, weapons, implants.
The graphics in this game are excelent. The videos are well done, and the field missions are always in decadent futuristic urban areas or similar complexes. They capture the cyberpunk atmosphere all too well, with civilians and policemen going around their lives while in the line of fire of an underground war. Sounds are good too, with some digitized voices and good music, that adds to the atmosphere of the game as well.
Gameplay is quite friendly. All you have to do is manage research, equip agents, then assemble them to missions, which most of times involve only killing and/or persuading people. Sometimes you'll have to think of some tactics to achieve victory, but usually if you're well equiped, careful and fast enough, missions won't be too hard. Other agents can be hard to deal with if you're outnumbered, but challenge is a good thing. The arsenal at your disposal gets highly destructive over time, and combats can get real rough later in the game.
It's a fairly long game, after all, how many missions would you need to take over the *world* eh? I'm not much of an action gamer, but this one involves good a balance with management, simplified gameplay and great atmosphere, so it's not just another in its league. Try it out.
