Here's the game that starts a whole chapter in the story of strategy gaming. Five years before New World Computing released the first Heroes of might and magic game, designer Jon Van Caneghem assembled most of the concepts found in Heroes in one underrated game: King's bounty.

Under the rule of King Maximus, for many years the kingdom of Continentia has been prosperous. People were happy, and life was peaceful. But that's all over now... the enemies of the king have managed to deprive him from the artifact that kept chaos and evil at bay for so long: the Scepter of Order. Now, as a captain under the king's colors, you have to amass an army, hunt and vanquish the enemies of the king scattered over the world, and reclaim their settlements back to their true sovereign. Cliched but epic, to say the least.

Graphics are standard for its time, although I think they could be better. When you enter a dwelling there are nice pictures to look at, but it's the field mode I think that should be more appealing to the eyes. Sounds are nearly nonexistent... so technically King's bounty wasn't all that jazz, which could explain its poor sales. Still, commands are easy to master and gameplay is intuitive. So, at first look it might not surprise you much, but once you have your eyes adjusted to the game, it gets more and more addictive.

A nice effort from New World Computing, King's bounty was not a huge hit, but it's a classic with historical value and a fair fun factor. If you like the Heroes series, you might want to take a look where it all started.
