I always thought SimAnt was the best insect war simulator out there -- until I found Battle bugs. I stand corrected! This game is so enjoyable it can keep you hooked for long hours, with the advantage of being a "war" game for the whole family.

The premise is very similar to that of SimAnt, but the game is totally different. You control an army of many kinds of insects (not only ants), and you have to vanquish the enemy insect army through a series of tactical missions. These missions involve mostly killing enemy bugs and conquering positions over the food available in each scenario (the usual human home of course). Although technically simple in terms of objective, the units are diverse and each type has a different set of features (attack, defense, movement, health and some special skill). Furthermore, although each scenario is quite small in size, they can feature lots of realistic obstacles and hazards, such as poison or...catchup.

The graphics and music are great in Battle bugs. The cutscenes and sceneries are very cool -- starting at the main screens where you load and save campaigns. They'd be even better if animated, which is a real shame, but it's still very cool. The tactical view could be a little bigger, specially considering the game played in 800x600. The bugs are so small you can barely make out which is friend or foe. A zooming tool would solve the matter, but such is life.

Before you even notice, you'll be planning your movement based on the possibility of throwing rocks from the top of a box of cookies or the ability some of your units have to fly right into the heart of the battle. So rest asured: it's not simply a war game for children, it's serious business. :)
