Even though we're the biggest fans of games of old, sometimes it's hard to find games from the 80's that really match the best games from the 90's, and why: usually because gameplay can be poor and sluggish, graphics were not VGA, and there was no Sound Blaster by that time. Wasteland, like only a few others, is a big exception.
The plot here is the following: you control a group of desert rangers on a struggle to bring any possible hope and order to a portion of a fried post-nuclear-holocaust California. Yes, this game is a predecessor to the highly successful Fallout series, and I must say, it's well worth it. It does not have the same plot and characters, but it's surely the same campaign setting.
The great fun factor of this game is due to a well put mix of challenge, gameplay and game plot, along with decent graphics and sounds -- remember, it was realeased in the late 80's. Even with the limited color pallette, non-player characters in combats and stores have a lot a of expression and are kind of funny, rolling their eyes, pointing guns and whatnot.
Having been released over fifteen years ago, this game retains its fun factor. Actually, I think I'll go play it right away, so stop reading this and download it already. :)
