Another great AD&D; release by SSI, the Eye of the beholder trilogy came packed with dozens of hours of puzzles, action and fun. If you survived (and liked) Dungeon master, be prepared for even better graphics and sounds. If you're an AD&D; fan, you'll be easily caught by this series! In my opinion, Eye of the beholder remains unrivalled in dungeon crawling until the release of Ultima underworld.
While Dungeon master was loosely inspired in the AD&D; pen'n'paper RPG, Eye of the beholder is clearly an AD&D; game, but loosely inspired in Dungeon master... technically better though (no wonder, EOB was released three years after DM's first apparition on the Atari ST). EOB borrows many interface elements and puzzles from DM.
For the most part, Eye of the beholder games focus on puzzle-solving and monster-bashing. The roleplaying parts of the games are somewhat rare and spaced between. You interact with only a few NPCs, which is a pity.
The interface is easy to use, but sometimes you'll have to be creative to figure out the solutions of certain problems -- and that's the point of good dungeon crawlers, otherwise the game would resume to insane clicking on the weapons you want to use, casting spells, healing, and starting over...
Again, if you liked Dungeon master (or some other dungeon crawler), Eye of the beholder should have you quickly addicted to it. If in the other hand you aren't familiar with dungeon crawlers, start with a good one and pick one in the Eye of the beholder trilogy.
