Natively created for the NES console, Ancient land of Ys has this marked "console-feel" -- a simple RPG, with cliched fantasy plot, only one character, almost no stats to keep track, easy fun.
It's one of the few games of its time that was created for some other system and wasn't poorly ported to PCs. The graphics and sounds were better in the consoles, but for an '89 PC game, I found it pretty impressive -- it has a primitive multilayered scenery, decent graphics when interacting in shops, some convincing animations (think King's bounty here). The music is poor, repetitive and a bit too loud, but bearable, I suppose.
Ys is extremely simple. You have only one statistic to evolve -- health. You start out with very little money to buy equipment, then buy better weapons as you get more gold from foes. The story is quite obious: monsters and criminals start to crowd the land out of nowhere, and a fortuneteller decides you're the right adventurer to find the six books of Ys, solve the mistery of the ancient land and save your home land from the evil Malificus.
Before you get the wrong idea, this is not another boring fairy tale. It's an epic action-RPG, and a classic breaking grounds for console games back then, so you might as well have a lot of fun with it. As I said before, this game is easy fun for you.
