Another game that followed Prince of Persia's model of gameplay, this time it's Blizzard delivering a great action adventure -- incredibly, the genre created by Prince of Persia, while simplistic, seemed limitless for many years to come. Like Flashback, the main difference here is the use of firearms and other items.

Well, story starts with Sarlac, the evil warlord, taking over the androthi kingdom. Just before its final demise, King Vlaros magically sends his only son Kyle to live among the earthlings, where he could grow in safety and one day return to claim his throne. And here comes the funny part: twenty years later, the boy returns a tough bad-ass wearing ripped-off jeans and carrying a shotgun with an attitude problem. If you're in to murder an army of orcs carrying big guns and grenades, it can't get better than that!

As said before, the game plays pretty much like Flashback and Prince of Persia. Graphics are simple but very nice. Civil war is bustling over the former androthi kingdom, so you find many casual fighters minding their own skirmishes. Sounds are as good as expected for a game from middle 90s.

I forgot to say that this game is FUN. Everyone played it on the PC or some console (it's been ported to many different platforms). Its combat system is fairly unique, you can dodge enemy fire like no other game from its time (after all, 2D logic says shots hardly miss a direct target unless there's some obstacle). There're few commands, and only the necessary. The player pretty much dictates the game's pace, and that works well for Blackthorne. The game sure could use some more cutscenes to keep you interested... but it's still thrilling to the end.

Action fans will be pleased, and pretty much any other kind of gamer should try this one out.
